WIC Compass

Texas WIC Approved Foods

Texas WIC's shopping guide covers 11 food groups: fruits and vegetables, milk, cheese and eggs, whole grains, beans and peanut butter, fish, breakfast cereal, yogurt, special milks, tofu and juice, baby food, and kosher milk and cheese. For each food it says which sizes and types you can buy, what is not approved, and, for some foods, which brands to choose. Below, the guide is sorted into cards you can scan.

This page is built from the Texas WIC Approved Foods Shopping Guide (WIC-34) from Texas Health and Human Services, Texas WIC. The guide is effective April 2026 to March 2027 (revision 4/26), and the state posted it on April 1, 2026. We last checked it in September 2026. The state updates its list over time, so confirm a product in the myWIC app or with your WIC office before you shop. Published by Robert B. (publisher and editor)

Before you shop: check your balance first. myWIC app, the Card Management Line, or a receipt. Card declined? Call 833-966-1382, Texas WIC Card Management Line, or see Texas WIC card help.

Use the guide with your benefit list

The guide shows brands and sizes. You also need your WIC benefit list: use the myWIC app to see your benefits, or bring the list you got at the WIC office. A store cashier can print a receipt with your balance. Use all your benefits each month, because what is left does not roll over.

How to read this page

"Choose any brand" means any brand of that food. "Choose these brands" means only the brands listed. "Look for the pink WIC sticker" means items tagged with the pink WIC Approved Item sticker, which can differ by store. "Not WIC approved" lists what you cannot buy with your Texas WIC card. Stores might not carry every item or brand.

How to check a product before you buy

  1. 1

Check your benefits. Use the myWIC app or your benefit list to see which foods you can buy and how much.

  2. 2

Match the brand and size. Check this page, the printed guide, or myWIC for the right brand and package size. For milk, cheese and juice, look for the pink WIC sticker.

  3. 3

Scan it in the store. The myWIC scan feature tells you whether an item is WIC approved and whether you have active benefits for it.

  4. 4

Not sure? Ask. Call the help line below, or ask the staff at your WIC office, before you buy.

Common questions

What do "Choose any brand" and "Choose these brands" mean?

"Choose any brand" means any brand of that food is fine if it meets the size and type rules. "Choose these brands" means only the brands named in the guide are covered. "Look for the pink WIC sticker" means choose items tagged with the pink WIC Approved Item sticker; the brands can differ at each store.

What if an item does not scan at checkout?

Check your benefit balance to make sure you have benefits left. Then check the guide or myWIC to make sure the item is the right size and brand. If it still does not scan as a WIC item, you can pay for it with your other groceries or put it back. If you think it should have scanned, use the "Report WIC Food Item Not Scanning" link in myWIC so WIC can review it.

How do I pay with my WIC card?

After all your items are scanned, you pay for your WIC items first. Pay with your WIC card and enter your PIN. The cashier gives you two receipts: one shows your starting balance and the other shows which items will be removed from your card. Check them, press approve, and save your receipts.

Which milk can my child get?

For children 1 year old, the guide lists whole milk in a half-gallon or gallon. For children 2 to 5 years old and women, it lists fat-free or low-fat (½% or 1%) milk in a half-gallon or gallon. A quart is only available if it is listed on your benefits. Organic, 2%, flavored, oat, almond and goat milk are not approved.

Can I buy organic foods?

It depends on the food. The guide says "organic or regular" for eggs, fruits and vegetables, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, canned beans, peanut butter and several others, but organic is not approved for milk, cheese, whole wheat bread or tortillas. Check the rules for each food.

Is infant formula in this guide?

No. This shopping guide covers baby food, baby cereal and baby food meats, but it does not list infant formula. Ask your WIC office which formula, if any, is in your baby's food package.

Do unused benefits roll over?

No. The guide says to use all your WIC benefits each month and that remaining benefits cannot roll over to the next month.

How current is this guide?

It is the state's WIC-34 shopping guide, effective April 2026 to March 2027. The state posted it on April 1, 2026. We last checked it in September 2026. Brands and sizes can change during the year, so confirm in the myWIC app or with your WIC office before you shop.

About this page: This is general information, not medical or nutrition advice, and it does not replace what your WIC clinic tells you. WIC Compass is an independent website, not part of the USDA, the WIC program, or Texas's WIC agency. We turned the state's product database into groups and counts; we do not add, change, or guess which products are approved. See how we verify our information.
