How We Verify WIC Office and Clinic Information

What we do to the data

We start from the state agency's published list and change as little as possible.

• We merge entries that are the same clinic listed twice (same address and phone).
• We tidy formatting: phone numbers, capitalization, and extra spaces. Obvious misspellings of a town name are corrected when the ZIP code confirms the town.
• We leave out entries the state itself labels as an administrative office with no clinic.
• We never add, guess, or fill in hours, phone numbers, or addresses the state does not give. A missing detail stays missing, and the listing says to call.

How we build approved-foods pages

A state's approved-foods list can be a short handout or a database of thousands of products. The second table at the top of this page names the document we used for each state.

• We use the state agency's current document and check its date. When a state has also posted an older list, we use the newer one.
• We group long product lists into food types, package sizes, and brands, and leave out barcodes. We never add, remove, or reword which products are approved.
• Some states publish a shopping guide written as rules and named brands instead of a database. For those we keep the rules, sizes, brands, and "not approved" lists exactly as the guide gives them, sorted by food type. We check every phrase on the page against the state's document, and we read multi-column brand lists by eye.
• Some states have separate tribal or local WIC programs with their own lists. We point to those when we know of them.
• The foods and amounts in your own package depend on your household. We do not say what is in yours. Your eWIC balance and your clinic do.

How we build the card help and appointment guides

These two pages have one section per state. Each fact comes from that state's own WIC pages and handouts, or from the county or city agency that runs WIC locally when the state leaves it to them. Each section links to its sources.

• If a state does not publish an answer, for example how long a replacement card takes, the section says it is not stated. We do not fill the gap with what other states do.
• When two sources disagree, or a page looks out of date or undated, we say so in a note next to the fact.
• Phone numbers, app names, and steps change. The "last checked" date at the top of each guide is the day we last compared it with the state's pages, and we only change it after a real re-check.

What "last checked" means

The month shown on a state page is when we last compared our copy with the state's list. It is not a promise that every clinic's details are current today. States update their lists on their own schedules, and some lists carry a publication date that is older than our check.

Report a problem

If a listing is wrong, tell us the clinic name and what you found. We check it against the state list and the clinic, and we fix what we can confirm.
